Silver Surfer was the wildcard of the 1990 eight-backs — a cosmic, philosophical character
with a genuinely unusual visual that stood out against the more grounded heroes and villains
around him. Putting him in the inaugural wave was a bold choice, and it paid off: the
all-silver figure on the peg caught your eye immediately, unlike anything else on the shelf.

The surfboard is the star of the show. It’s a flat silver disc-board that the figure can
be posed standing on, and it’s removable — so you could stash Norrin Radd on his board for
display or send him flying solo depending on the scene. The entirely chrome-silver deco is
striking; there are no paint applications to speak of beyond the board itself, which gives
the figure an unusual, almost sculptural quality.

For kids who knew the character from the Fantastic Four comics or the 1987 Silver Surfer
series, this was a dream. For kids who didn’t, he was just the mysterious shiny guy — which
honestly might have been an even better introduction to the character than any comic.
